Other Issues in Media and Society

Hey everyone! As I was going through the blogs of my classmates, I found more information about issues concerning media and society that are worth mentioning. To expand your knowledge about media issues, do not hesitate and visit the following blogs. https://socialmedia-notreallife.blogspot.com/ This blog discusses how people do not realize that the social media life is often fake. The difference between reality and life on social media is hard to distinguish for some people. They think that if others have beautiful posts, automatically their lives are full of joy, unforgettable trips and great parties. However, this is often far from the truth. Moreover, the blog mentions how social media can cause depression and mental health problems. https://evaesne.wordpress.com/ In Ev’s spot, issues such as how social media is toxic, body overpositivity and body images in media are discussed. The topic about beauty standards is very sensitive for majority of people and mostly wo

My View

Hello everyone! In this post I would like to share my point of view on this topic and hope you will be able to look at this issue from a different perspective. Instagram influences people in many ways. Even though it is supposed to be a positive platform for people to express their feelings and thoughts through photos or Instagram stories, I think it carries a negative stigma, too.  Some people feel as if they need to show the entire world how perfect their life is. Their photos are edited by using various filters, they put inspirational quotes as captions and sometimes they even photoshop themselves in order to look better. When you meet them in person, you are able to tell the difference between the pictures they post and their actual appearance. Girls and women are easily influenced by appearance of other women who have perfect skin, good curves, flat stomach and a pretty smile. This can lead to ruining self-esteem and often creates feelings of anxiety and depre

For Further Research

Hey, everyone! Since I am convinced that topic about Instagram and its effect is broad and there are many opinions about this issue, I would like to suggest some websites to visit. Firstly, I suggest visiting https://studybreaks.com/culture/instagram-addiction/ by Vanessa Le because not only it explains negative and dangerous effects of using Instagram, but it also describes experience of a famous person who quit using Instagram for her own good. Moreover, you might be surprised how many bad habits mentioned in the article you have as well. Another interesting webpage that caught my attention while writing my blog was https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2018/sep/17/instagram-is-supposed-to-be-friendly-so-why-is-it-making-people-so-miserable . Example of famous fashion blogger who posts pictures in partnership with certain brands was mentioned as well as negative reactions from people seeing those posts. I think it is worth visiting because it explains the power of Instag

What the Experts Say II

Social media is an open forum where everyone can be creative and permits us to be heard. It provides certain individuals the opportunity to reach wider audiences, crating an online community and space for a discussion. Instagram is well-known social media for sharing pictures and thoughts and its main concern is to have users post appropriate content which does not violate its norms. The common idea is that you should not post a picture which you would not show to your children, boss or parents. This includes nudity or mature content and violence. However, there are different degrees of censorship to control the portrayal of male and female bodies. For instance, “King of Instagram” Dan Bilzerian, with over 16,4 million followers, usually posts photos of women, guns and trips to Vegas. Photos of Kim Kardashian West’s bottom are allowed to stay, while female nipples or other bare body parts which do not belong to her or other famous people are considered to be inappropriate and taken do

What the Experts Say I

Instagram is a photo-based platform and people associate it with self-expression and self-identity. However, it is associated with negative things as well. According to #StatusOfMind  survey done in 2017 of almost 1,500 teens, Instagram is the worst social media for mental health and well-being. It is associated with depression, anxiety, bullying and FOMO, which means „fear of missing out“. Survey participants answered various questions about how social media platforms impacted 14 different issues related to their mental or physical health. There were some benefits such as self-expression and community building or emotional support. However, Instagram and other social media (Snapchat, Facebook, Twitter) received negative marks, too. For instance, sleep quality, bullying, body image and FOMO were mentioned and associated with increase in depression and anxiety. Some studies suggest that people who spend more than two hours a day on social media are more likely to report psychologic

Hey, readers! I think we all found the new “Your Activity” feature on our Instagram account.  Many people all around the world have problem with Instagram addiction and that influences them negatively. Nevertheless, inventors of the “Your Activity” feature hope to help with fighting this addiction.  For those who do not know what is going on, let’s look at more information about this new update. When people spend too much time on social media, and especially Instagram, they stop interacting with other people. They passively consume information, read but do not talk to others. Moreover, people can get depressed when they see that others have better posts and that can lead to negative comparison. “Your Activity” feature is supposed to help Instagram users to manage their time they spend using the app. You can set your daily limits on how much time you want to spend using Instagram. This way, inventors hope to tackle the social media addiction. When you reach your limit, the notific

Blackfishing is a term which has been used recently and is describing people, especially women, who are accused of pretending to be black on social media. They use make-up, tanning and sometimes surgeries to achieve a different appearance. This trend appeared in November  when people on Twitter started calling on people to post women who pretended to be black. Consequently, the tweet had more than 23,000 retweets and many responses criticizing these people for doing such thing. They also provided pictures before and after, which show huge differences and changes in their skin tones. However, these accused Instagram users claim that their intention is not to change their appearance in order to look black  (Petter, 2018) . Swedish Instagram influencer, Emma Hallberg, is the most infamous for blackfishing. After two visibly different pictures of her were posted online, she had to defend herself. She told Buzzfeed that she sees herself only as white and that she gets her tan nat

Negative influences of Instagram

The aim of this blog is to inform readers who are interested in this topic about various issues connected with it. Social media in general has a great impact on today’s society and influence people in many ways. I chose Instagram and its negative effects because I am convinced that it affects the youth significantly. They spend an incredible amount of time scrolling through their feed and the things they see, like, share or post somehow shape their point of view and values as well. Furthermore, there are some dangers when it comes to Instagram; people do not value their privacy and therefore anyone can have a look into their life, some people believe strangers who contact them and this can lead to severe consequences. Moreover, children and teenagers often do not realize that what they see may not be the actual reality, but just a reflection of what people want to make it look like.
