What the Experts Say I

Instagram is a photo-based platform and people associate it with self-expression and self-identity. However, it is associated with negative things as well. According to #StatusOfMind survey done in 2017 of almost 1,500 teens, Instagram is the worst social media for mental health and well-being. It is associated with depression, anxiety, bullying and FOMO, which means „fear of missing out“. Survey participants answered various questions about how social media platforms impacted 14 different issues related to their mental or physical health. There were some benefits such as self-expression and community building or emotional support. However, Instagram and other social media (Snapchat, Facebook, Twitter) received negative marks, too. For instance, sleep quality, bullying, body image and FOMO were mentioned and associated with increase in depression and anxiety. Some studies suggest that people who spend more than two hours a day on social media are more likely to report psychological distress when they, for example, see their friends having fun and enjoying life. Consequently, they feel as if they were missing out on something. Moreover, Instagram posts sometimes set unrealistic expectations and create feelings of low self-esteem. It makes girls and women feel as if their bodies were not good enough because people use filters and edit their pictures in order to look perfect. The Royal Society for Public Health suggests that the government can help in decreasing Instagram’s harmful effects, too. They say that „safe social media use“ should be taught at schools during health education classes and they hope to empower young adults to use social media „in a way that promotes and protects their health and well-being“ (MacMillan, 2017).

To expand your knowledge about media issues, do not hesitate and visit the following blogs. https://socialmedia-notreallife.blogspot.com/ This blog discusses how people do not realize that the social media life is often fake. The difference between reality and life on social media is hard to distinguish for some people. They think that if others have beautiful posts, automatically their lives are full of joy, unforgettable trips and great parties. However, this is often far from the truth. Moreover, the blog mentions how social media can cause depression and mental health problems. https://evaesne.wordpress.com/ In Ev’s spot, issues such as how social media is toxic, body overpositivity and body images in media are discussed. The topic about beauty standards is very sensitive for majority of people and mostly wo...

Current Event I

Blackfishing is a term which has been used recently and is describing people, especially women, who are accused of pretending to be black on social media. They use make-up, tanning and sometimes surgeries to achieve a different appearance. This trend appeared in November  when people on Twitter started calling on people to post women who pretended to be black. Consequently, the tweet had more than 23,000 retweets and many responses criticizing these people for doing such thing. They also provided pictures before and after, which show huge differences and changes in their skin tones. However, these accused Instagram users claim that their intention is not to change their appearance in order to look black  (Petter, 2018) . Swedish Instagram influencer, Emma Hallberg, is the most infamous for blackfishing. After two visibly different pictures of her were posted online, she had to defend herself. She told Buzzfeed that she sees herself only as white and that she gets he...

For Further Research

Hey, everyone! Since I am convinced that topic about Instagram and its effect is broad and there are many opinions about this issue, I would like to suggest some websites to visit. Firstly, I suggest visiting https://studybreaks.com/culture/instagram-addiction/ by Vanessa Le because not only it explains negative and dangerous effects of using Instagram, but it also describes experience of a famous person who quit using Instagram for her own good. Moreover, you might be surprised how many bad habits mentioned in the article you have as well. Another interesting webpage that caught my attention while writing my blog was https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2018/sep/17/instagram-is-supposed-to-be-friendly-so-why-is-it-making-people-so-miserable . Example of famous fashion blogger who posts pictures in partnership with certain brands was mentioned as well as negative reactions from people seeing those posts.
